The invention relates to a method for controlling a tire pressure monitoring system of a vehicle, the tire pressure monitoring system having: an electronic control device comprising a receiving unit, a main memory and an intermediate memory; and one tire sensor module (RSM) for each vehicle wheel, the tire sensor module including a transmit/receive unit, a battery and a pressure sensor. The tire sensor module transmits a sensor data set (SDS) by radio at specific time intervals and after triggering, the sensor data set containing at least one specific identification code (sensor ID), a tire pressure value and triggering information. In order to enable a driver or an assembler to relatively quickly and simply assign the wheel position to the tire sensor module after a wheel change, the control method provides that a detection function (EF) is carried out after switching on an ignition switch of the vehicle or after switching on an on-board power supply and then a condition-dependent checking function (PF) is carried out, and that the condition-dependent checking function (PF) is carried out after switching on the ignition switch of the vehicle or after switching on the on-board power supply. During the implementation of the detection function, the triggering of all the tire sensor modules is waited in a sequence that is characteristic for the wheel positioning, the sensor data sets of the triggered tire sensor modules are received by the control device and the sensor data sets are stored in an intermediate memory in the sequence received by the control device, the plausibility of the sensor data sets stored in the intermediate memory is checked in a checking function, and if the result of the checking is positive, they are stored in the main memory instead of older sensor data sets.
