The invention relates to a method and system for improving fuel economy of a hybrid powertrain in a vehicle. Methods and systems are disclosed for improving fuel economy and reducing emissions of a vehicle having an electric motor, an engine, and an energy storage device. The method and system involve obtaining look-ahead information and current state information, where the look-ahead information includes a predicted vehicle speed and the current state information includes a current state of charge (SOC) of an energy storage device coupled to an electric motor; and determining a target power distribution between the energy storage device and the engine based on the look-ahead information and the current state information.
