A hinge assembly is provided for lifting a hood of a vehicle relative to a vehicle body before, during, or after a collision has occurred to buffer contact with a pedestrian. When in the fixed position, the hood selectively covers a compartment of the vehicle. The hinge assembly includes a hinge configured to guide the hood relative to the vehicle body from a fixed position to an open position or a pedestrian deployed position. An actuator moves the hood from a fixed position to a pedestrian deployed position. The controller controls the actuator based at least in part on a characteristic of the pedestrian.
