An active suspension actuator system is described that includes an actuator having a compressed volume and an expanded volume. In some embodiments, the system includes one or more flow control devices in fluid communication with a compressed volume and/or an expanded volume of the actuator. In some examples, the flow control device may include a pressure balanced drain valve (PBOV). In some embodiments, the system includes a high capacity bi-directional base valve. In some embodiments, two or more flow control devices cooperate to dampen low amplitude oscillations, e.g., in an extended volume and/or a compression volume, and to allow pump-generated pressure differences to increase while spiking the road-induced rapid pressure difference between the compression volume and the extended volume.
