The invention relates to a method for calibrating a road monitoring device, in which the road monitoring device records a predetermined monitoring area and detects objects in the monitoring area, and determines and provides object data relating to the objects, in particular the positions thereof. Within a predefined calibration period, the position of the detected object relative to the road monitoring device is recorded and thereby an accumulated object residence map is formed. In addition, there is a world coordinate map of lanes or lane centers of the monitored area and the position of these lanes or lane centers in a predefined world coordinate system. Now, by moving and/or rotating an accumulated object residence map or an in particular filtered object residence map derived therefrom on the basis of a computer, and on the basis of the computer determining a respective degree of correspondence with a world coordinate map, the position and orientation with a predefined degree of correspondence are automatically determined, the actual position and the actual orientation of the sensor are derived from the position, and the position of the object is calibrated accordingly.
