A system and method for decelerating a vehicle. Road conditions around the vehicle are monitored, and it is determined whether these road conditions are dangerous. The engine control unit is informed of the hazardous road condition and changes operation of the engine control unit in response to the hazardous road condition. When an operator of the vehicle desires to decelerate the vehicle, an indication is received indicating an intent to decelerate the vehicle. The vehicle is then decelerated based on the changed operation of the engine control unit by applying a vacuum to increase a manifold vacuum of the engine.
