Seat suspensions utilizing a non-linear stiffness design are provided herein. A suspension system with vibration isolation is described. The suspension system may include a kinematic structure including a pair of X-shaped support structures connected in parallel. The kinematic structure limits the motion in the vertical direction to a single degree of freedom. Tensioning/damping of the kinematic structure is orthogonal to vertical movement, horizontal movement of the kinematic structure is limited, and movement in the vertical direction is correspondingly restrained. The tensioning/damping imparts passive non-linear stiffness and non-linear damping to the vibration energy of the suspension system. Tuning mechanisms may be included to achieve tension/damping adjustments to accommodate different heights and payloads. The system may provide vibration isolation in low and broadband frequency ranges. The suspension system has a tunable ultra-low resonance frequency and an anti-resonance characteristic. In exemplary applications, the suspension system may be incorporated into a seat for applications subject to whole body vibrations.
