The invention relates to a safety brake actuator, and specifically, an elevator system includes a guide rail, an elevator car, a safety brake actuator, and a safety brake. A safety brake actuator and a safety brake are mounted to the elevator car for movement with the elevator car along the guide rail in use. The safety brake actuator includes an actuation mechanism configured to, in use, actuate engagement of the safety brake against the guide rail. The safety brake actuator further includes a proximal surface wherein the safety brake actuator is mounted adjacent the guide rail and the proximal surface faces and is spaced apart from the guide rail to define a gap gap between the guide rail and the proximal surface of the safety brake actuator. The safety brake actuator also includes an object steering arrangement positioned relative to the lash gap to prevent or impede entry of foreign matter into the lash gap.
