A head-up display for displaying an image on a vehicle windshield includes a graphic projection module for generating an image on a vehicle windshield; a user input device for receiving a user-generated command created by a user of the vehicle; and one or more controllers in electronic communication with the graphics projection module and the user input device. The controller executes the instructions to instruct the graphics projection module to generate a brightness adjustment graphics, where the brightness adjustment graphics includes an adaptive palette graphics that includes two or more colors. The controller receives a user-generated brightness input from the user input device indicating a brightness level change for a selected color, where the user selects the brightness level change for the selected color to discriminate a difference between two or more colors caused by a color visual defect.
