The invention provides an automatic charging device based on an electric vehicle and a charging method, the automatic charging device comprises a charging pile and a connector mechanism arranged on the electric vehicle, the connector mechanism is in separable butt joint with the charging pile, and the connector mechanism comprises a connecting supporting piece used for being connected to the electric vehicle; the butt joint is arranged on the connecting supporting piece; a protection space is arranged in the opening and closing protection part, and the butt joint is arranged in the protection space; the magnetic positioning piece is connected to the opening and closing protection piece, and the opening and closing protection piece moves through the attraction force of the magnetic positioning piece so as to close the protection space; the charging pile comprises a multi-shaft driving part which is provided with a movable end; the charging part is arranged on the movable end of the multi-axis driving part and is driven by the multi-axis driving part to move; and the position sensor is used for positioning the position of the butt joint by sensing the magnetic field intensity of the magnetic positioning piece. The problems that in the prior art, butt joint is not accurate during charging butt joint, manual adjustment is needed, and consequently operation is troublesome are solved.
