A smart lead acid battery system capable of monitoring parameters (e.g., voltage, temperature) of one or more cells (140) of a lead acid battery. In one implementation, a battery system includes a housing having a battery cell compartment (400), a battery monitoring system (BMS) compartment (405), and a wall disposed between the battery cell compartment and the BMS compartment. The first post and the second post are associated with a battery cell. The first post and the second post protrude through a wall between the battery cell compartment and the BMS compartment. A voltage sensor (270) is electrically coupled to the first post and the second post to monitor a voltage of the battery cell. A temperature sensor may be coupled to the first post or the second post, or both. The intelligent AGM battery system may predict the state of health, state of charge, module state, power capacity, life expectation, and the like of the battery module.
