The present disclosure provides an active ion propulsion system for a motor vehicle. An ion airflow management system for a motor vehicle includes: a controller; a power source in communication with the controller; at least one external component of the motor vehicle, the at least one external component having a one-piece electrode in electrical communication with the power source, the one-piece electrode comprising a cathode terminal portion and an anode terminal portion oriented relative to a controlled airflow vector; and at least one sensor in communication with the controller, the at least one sensor including a speed sensor. The power source receives a signal from the controller to supply a predetermined amount of electrical power to the unitary electrode based on a threshold velocity detected by the velocity sensor in an active mode. The power supply receives a signal from the controller to shut off electrical power to the unitary electrode below the threshold speed in an inactive mode.
