The present disclosure provides far infrared detection of compacted snow for lane keeping. A steerable vehicle is configured to assist a driver crossing a snowy road. A vehicle uses a peripheral sensor including a far infrared camera to inspect a road ahead of the vehicle. The vehicle is equipped with a driver assistance system configured to operate the vehicle into a specified path or to operate the vehicle by remaining in the specified path. The vehicle uses a controller to support a lane keeping mode that is configured to be active when a road is covered by snow. The lane keeping mode checks images captured by a far infrared camera for tire trajectories and road edge features of previous vehicles that each form compacted snow, and may assist in determining an avoidance path or an unfavorable navigation area. The avoidance path may be presented to the driver on a display or may be autonomously followed.
