A fixed wing, driven, buoyancy-free, encapsulated freight aircraft design for carrying light cargo wind turbine components is disclosed. A freight aircraft may include a fuselage defining a front fuselage end, a rear fuselage end, and a continuous internal cargo hold from the front fuselage end to the rear fuselage end across almost an entire length of the fuselage, the cargo hold being capable of enclosing a maximum payload length generally ranging from about 75 meters to 125 meters. The aircraft is capable of short take-off and landing (STOL) operations while carrying a maximum payload weight. The takeoff length may be less than about 10 times the maximum payload length.
