A high torque brake system is provided. A method of automatically activating a high torque braking system in a heavy vehicle configured to operate in at least one low speed high torque mode and at least one high speed low torque mode is also disclosed. The method includes determining that a speed controller device, such as a control lever or joystick, of the vehicle is in a first position that causes the vehicle to travel in a high-speed low-torque mode; and, in response to detecting braking and a change in position of the speed controller from the first position to the second neutral position, activating a low-speed high-torque operating mode for braking the vehicle.
