A system (1) for powering an electric vehicle (2a-b) comprises an electrical conductor (3) extending along a road segment (4) and a central electronic control unit (CECU) (8). The vehicle comprises a current collector (5a-b), an on-board energy storage device (7a-b) and a vehicle electronic control unit (VECU) (6a-b) connected thereto. The VECU is configured to determine a current required power and a current energy storage state, and send a signal indicative of the current required power and the energy storage state to the CECU. The CECU is configured to determine a maximum power available via the electrical conductor and a power to be received for each vehicle such that the maximum power is not exceeded, and to send to each VECU at least one power control signal indicative of the power to be received. The VECU is configured to control the received power in response to the at least one power control signal.
