An access system (10) for a vehicle, equipment or facility, the access system (10) comprising: at least one section having a plurality of steps/steps (56); a telescoping mechanism having at least one actuator (28), the telescoping mechanism being arranged to retract the access device (12) and to allow the access device to deploy; and at least one armrest assembly (32) pivotally connected to the access device (12) such that the armrest assembly (32) is folded relative to the at least one section for stowing and extends to provide an armrest for supporting a user when the access device (12) is deployed.
