The invention relates to lane keeping based on lane position unconsciousness. A computer-implemented method and apparatus for controlling a lane support system of a vehicle are disclosed. The method includes obtaining data indicating that a driver of the vehicle is in a non-focused state and determining an expected path of the driver at a point in time when the driver enters the non-focused state. The method includes determining an undesired lateral deviation from an expected path by calculating a function representing a lateral deviation from the expected path of the driver. The function depends on at least one of a change in the steering wheel angle when the driver is in the non-focused state and a change in the road geometry in the direction of travel of the vehicle when the driver is in the non-focused state. The method includes, when the determined undesired lateral deviation does not meet a threshold, activating a lane support system, where the lane support system is configured to output a warning and/or perform an intervention to the driver when a lane departure of the vehicle is detected in order to control steering of the vehicle.
