The invention relates to a device (1) for returning a rocket stage (2) to the atmosphere and landing, for safely returning a rocket stage (2) to the atmosphere and/or safely landing a rocket stage (2) in water. The invention also relates to a corresponding method. The device has a globe (3) configured to be folded in a first state and unfolded in a second state, the globe (3) can be arranged on the rocket stage (2) in the folded state such that the aerodynamics of the rocket stage is not negatively affected by the globe (3), and the globe (3) substantially wraps the rocket stage (2) in the unfolded state. The device further comprises a wrapping mechanism designed to perform a process of wrapping the rocket stage with the parachute, and a filling mechanism designed to fill the parachute with air from the boundary layer upon return to the atmospheric layer so as to bring the parachute into a deployed state, and to fill the parachute with air from the boundary layer upon return to the atmospheric layer. The boundary layer is created between a plasma formed in front of the surface of the device when returning to the atmosphere and the surface of the device. The invention also relates to a controller which is designed to control the coating mechanism and the filling mechanism.
