An electric bicycle ("e-bike") is disclosed that is configured to achieve automatic and dynamic ride control based on a rider's desired ride goal without requiring direct physical input by the rider during riding. A rider specifies various input parameters representing a desired ride target via her mobile device or a device integrated with an electric bicycle. A target-based ride control algorithm is then executed to determine settings of controlled variables, such as gear ratio, motor assist level, braking force, and/or suspension pressure, based on sensor information indicative of input variables, such as pedal rhythm, vehicle speed, current transmission position, electric motor power, GPS position, terrain altitude, etc. In this way, the rider's desired ride target is supported as indicated by the specified input parameters. Thus, the rider can obtain a desired riding experience without directly manipulating the controlled variable during riding.
