The invention relates to aircraft mass estimation. There is provided a method of generating an estimated initial mass of an aircraft, the method comprising the steps of obtaining a first sequence of instructions indicative of an intent of the aircraft for a particular phase of flight. The first instruction sequence includes a plurality of sequential list instructions for a set of legs for a particular phase, and operation of the aircraft according to the first instruction sequence will result in a particular altitude profile during the particular phase. The method includes determining a first estimated mass of the aircraft and a throttle law command using a bounded optimization operation, the first estimated mass and the throttle law command together resulting in a particular altitude profile over a set of ones of the legs. The method includes the step of generating a second command sequence that replaces a list command for the set of legs with a throttle law command. The method further includes determining an estimated initial mass based at least in part on the first estimated mass.
