One aspect includes a vehicle including a track inspection sensor configured to capture sensor data describing a track; and a processor configured to receive the sensor data and process the sensor data in near real-time to determine whether the captured sensor data identifies a suspicious track defect. The processing includes inputting the captured sensor data into a machine learning system that has been trained to identify a pattern in the sensor data indicative of a track defect. The processing also includes receiving an output from the machine learning system indicating whether the captured sensor data identifies a suspicious track defect. A suspicious track defect is identified based at least in part on the output indicating the captured sensor data, and an alert is sent to an operator of the vehicle. The alert includes a location of a suspected track defect and instructs an operator to stop the vehicle and perform a service action.
