According to a method for at least partially automatic longitudinal control of a motor vehicle (1), sensor data representing the surroundings are generated by means of an environment sensor system (10). A velocity vector (8) of the road user (2) in the surroundings is determined by means of the computing unit (4) on the basis of the sensor data, and a potential collision of the road user (2) with the motor vehicle (1) is predicted. On the basis of the velocity vector (8), a movement of the road user (2) substantially transverse to the direction of movement (7) of the motor vehicle is determined and a target velocity for the motor vehicle (1) is calculated in order to avoid the predicted collision. The speed of the motor vehicle (1) is automatically reduced to the target speed.
