In order to provide a display device which has a variable viewing mode and which can be produced inexpensively with little technical effort, it is proposed in a display device (100) that the control unit (16) is designed to cause a dynamic change in the radiation characteristics of the display device (100) by actuating the liquid crystal optical unit (12, 12a, 12b), the display device comprises a backlight unit (10), a liquid crystal display panel (11), at least one liquid crystal optical unit (12, 12a, 12b), and a control unit (16), in which the liquid crystal optical unit (12, 12a, 12b) comprises a liquid crystal (13), the refractive index curve of which changes according to an applied voltage (22).
