The invention discloses a traffic management system and method for an intersection, and the system comprises a microcontroller, an automobile counting sensor, a traffic light, a wireless transmission module, and a cloud service platform, the microcontroller receives the data of the sensor, manages the traffic light, calculates the number of automobiles on a monitored crossroad street, and transmits the number of the automobiles to the cloud service platform. The microcontroller sends the number of automobiles per minute to the local server, the local server exchanges received data with the cloud server, the received data is used as input, the traffic light time interval required for smoothing the traffic flow is determined, the calculated time is compared with the current actual time of the traffic light, and the traffic flow is smoothed. And if the current actual green time is less than the calculated time, determining to increase the green time, otherwise, reducing the green time. According to the number of the available vehicles on the road, different times are distributed for all traffic signals, the congestion problem can be effectively solved, and the road traffic condition can be more efficiently and effectively controlled by executing the lane change at the crossroad of the road.
