The invention provides a method for detecting people trapped in an elevator and a device for detecting people trapped in the elevator. The method comprises the following steps: receiving operation data associated with the operation of the elevator in real time; determining whether the operation data comprises fault information indicating that the elevator breaks down or not; and under the condition that the operation data contains the fault information, whether people are trapped in the elevator or not is detected on the basis of the position information of the elevator, the load bearing information of the elevator and the motion state information of the elevator which are contained in the operation data.
