It has been proposed to detect the operating pressure of a tire by installing a tire monitor within the tire while installing a wireless communication interface arranged to transmit readings from the tire monitor to an external reader. However, such a system needs to be powered by a battery, which has a limited life. A tire monitor (26) is provided that includes a sensor device (12) configured to operate within an enclosed space formed by a wheel and a tire, and an energy harvester unit (28, 29). The energy harvester is arranged to convert a first type of energy (e.g., mechanical energy, thermal energy) experienced by the harvester unit in use into electrical energy to power the sensor device (12). The energy harvester may be, for example, a piezoelectric device or a thermoelectric generator. In use, the mechanical stress experienced by the tire monitor is converted into electrical energy that can be used to power the sensor as a supplement to the energy of a battery (18) within the tire monitor, thereby extending the service life of the tire monitor.
