A collision alert system and method for a micro-mobility vehicle includes a proximity sensor, a speed sensor, an alert device, and a controller having a bypass mode and an alert mode. The controller compares a speed of the micro-mobility vehicle to a predetermined speed threshold, enters a bypass mode when the speed of the micro-mobility vehicle is less than the predetermined speed threshold, and enters a warning mode when the speed of the micro-mobility vehicle is greater than the predetermined speed threshold. The controller does not activate the warning device in the bypass mode, calculates an estimated time prior to a potential collision with the object in the warning mode, compares the estimated time to a predetermined time threshold, and generates a collision warning by activating the warning device in response to the estimated time prior to the collision being less than the predetermined time threshold.
