The invention relates to a driving system for a motor vehicle having a steering wheel, comprising a hand-free driving function for automatic driving, the hand-free driving function allowing, in an activated state, a hand-free driving operation of at least automatic lateral guidance without the need for the driver to touch the steering wheel, and during the automatic lateral guidance, the hand-free driving function allows the hand-free driving operation of at least automatic lateral guidance. A controllable steering system can be controlled according to a target signal on which control is based, and a driving system is used to generate the target signal. There are hand-held recognition means for recognizing that the driver touches the steering wheel and one or more slip-off safety mechanisms in order to ensure automatic lateral guidance during slip-off driving operation. The driving system is configured to: deactivate a slip-off driving function while ceaselessly using the at least one slip-off safety mechanism; confirming that the driver touches the steering wheel by means of the handheld recognition device; and responsive to confirming that the driver touches the steering wheel, also deactivating the one or more slip-out safety mechanisms.
