A method for controlling a battery according to one embodiment of the present invention is a method for controlling a battery performed by a BMS, in which the method may comprise the steps of: when there is no request relating to use of a battery system from a superior system within a predetermined period of time; performing a process for switching the state of the battery pack to a standby mode, the standby mode being a low power state; when a battery system activation request is received from a superior system during execution of a plurality of operations including the process for switching to the standby mode, exiting the process for switching to the standby mode in response to the corresponding request; and transitioning the state of the battery pack to a normal state.
