An energy storage system converts variable renewable electrical energy (VRE) to persistent heat in excess of 1000 DEG C. And intermittently heating the solid medium by electric energy. Heat from the solid medium is continuously delivered on demand. An array of bricks containing an internal radiating cavity is heated directly by thermal radiation. The cavity facilitates rapid, uniform heating via reradiation. A thermocline is established via heat transfer of the flowing gas that maintains a high outlet temperature throughout the discharge process. Gas flows through the structured passages within the array, delivering heat, which can be used in processes including calcination, hydrogen electrolysis, steam generation, and thermal power generation and cogeneration. The thermal storage array group may be controlled and operated at elevated temperatures without thermal runaway via deep discharge ordering. The forecast-based control uses current and prior weather information and VRE availability to achieve continuous year-round heating. The high voltage DC power conversion and distribution circuit improves the efficiency of VRE power transfer into the system.
