A high efficiency hydrogen fuel system for a high altitude aircraft utilizes a compressor to compress air to a sufficiently high pressure for a fuel cell. The liquid hydrogen is compressed and then used in the heat exchanger to cool the compressed air, thereby maintaining the air at a sufficiently low temperature for the fuel cell. Hydrogen is also used to cool the fuel cell as it is also depressurized before entering the fuel cell cycle. The water condensation system allows water to be removed from the gas stream to reduce the impact on the atmosphere. The hydrogen fuel system may be used with VTOL aircraft, which may enable them to fly at higher altitudes. The hydrogen fuel system may be used in other subsonic and supersonic aircraft, such as asymmetric wing aircraft.
