A modular boost converter assembly includes a fuel cell (100), a modular boost converter (102), a battery (104), an electric machine (106), and a capacitor (108). A modular boost converter (102) includes a plurality of modules (110), (112), (114). Each of the plurality of modules (110), (112), (114) includes a boost system. Only one converter (102) is required to utilize each of the fuel cell (100) and the capacitor (108). A single converter (102) may have the ability to convert power greater than the energy of the fuel cell (100), but the total output power of the converter (102) is less than the total energy provided in combination with the fuel cell (100) and the capacitor (108). A modular boost converter (102) selectively draws energy from at least one of a fuel cell (100) and a capacitor (108) with internal module switching.
