A rotary wing assembly includes an axis of rotation and a plurality of rotary wings configured to rotate about the axis of rotation. Each of the rotary airfoils includes a leading edge, a trailing edge, a suction surface between the leading edge and the trailing edge, and a pressure surface between the leading edge and the trailing edge. The suction surface and the pressure surface are positioned on opposite sides of the rotary wing such that the rotary wing generates lift as an airflow flows through the suction surface and the pressure surface of the rotary wing as the rotary wing rotates about the axis of rotation. At least one opening is located on one of the suction surface or the pressure surface. The at least one opening is configured to eject air or draw air into the opening.
