In a vehicle occupant protection system, a gas generator assembly (12) has at least one separate carrier (24) that can be mounted on the vehicle and at least two gas generators (16, 18) that are securely mounted on the carrier (24). The control unit (22) determines the point in time at which the at least two gas generators (16, 18) are activated simultaneously or in a time-shifted manner in order to activate one of the gas generators (16, 18) before a possible imminent accident situation, such that the airbag (14) is filled in such a way that the airbag interacts with the assigned vehicle occupant, and the airbag (14) is filled in such a way that the airbag (14) can be activated in the imminent accident situation. The interaction moves the vehicle occupant by a predetermined distance.
