The invention provides a crawler telescopic boom crane and a control method thereof. The crawler telescopic boom crane comprises a hoisting mechanism, a connecting arm mechanism and a balance weight trolley, the hoisting mechanism comprises a hoisting chassis, a slewing bearing arranged on the hoisting chassis and an upper part hinged to the slewing bearing, the balance weight trolley is provided with a balance weight chassis, one end of the connecting arm mechanism is hinged to the slewing bearing, and the other end of the connecting arm mechanism is hinged to the upper part of the slewing bearing. The other end of the lifting rod is hinged with the counterweight trolley; when the counterweight chassis does circular motion along the hoisting mechanism, the slewing bearing and the upper part on the slewing bearing are driven to rotate through the connecting arm mechanism; and when the counterweight chassis is parallel to the hoisting chassis, the crawler telescopic boom crane is in a walking or to-be-walking state. According to the invention, large-load far-amplitude hoisting operation can be realized, actions such as on-load walking and rotation can be realized, and the hoisting construction requirements are met.
