A management system for a multi-cell rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) is capable of wireless communication with an unsecure third-party device. The management system includes a system controller in communication with battery cell monitoring elements arranged to individually monitor battery cells. Each cell monitoring element comprises a cell controller in communication with a sensor arranged to determine a parameter of a respective one of the cells of the RESS. Each battery cell controller is configured to execute a secure wireless communication protocol, and also configured to execute an open wireless communication protocol. In response to the trigger event, an open wireless communication protocol is activated to enable non-proprietary wireless communication with a neighboring third party device.
