The invention provides a traction battery pack venting system and venting method. A traction battery pack exhaust system includes a plurality of battery arrays within a traction battery pack. The battery arrays each have a plurality of individual battery cells. The system also includes a divider system that provides a plurality of exhaust gas receiving compartments. Each of the exhaust gas receiving compartments is separate and distinct from other exhaust gas receiving compartments of the plurality of exhaust gas receiving compartments. Each of the exhaust gas receiving compartments is associated with one of the battery arrays. Each of the exhaust gas receiving compartments may be associated with a manifold. Exhaust gases generated by thermal runaway may be vented to the exhaust gas receiving compartment, directed to a manifold, and vented to the outside atmosphere.
