Various methods, controllers, and algorithms are described for identifying the rear of a particular vehicle (e.g., a formation partner) in a set of distance measurement scenarios and/or for tracking the rear of such a vehicle. The described techniques may be used in conjunction with a variety of different distance measurement techniques, including radars, lidar, camera-based distance measurement units, and the like. The described methods are well suited for use in vehicle fleet and/or vehicle escort systems including traction-trailer fleet applications. In another aspect, techniques are described for fusing sensor data obtained from different vehicles for at least partially automatic control of a particular vehicle. The described techniques are well suited for use in conjunction with a variety of different vehicle control applications, including fleet, convoy, and other connected driving applications, including traction-trailer fleet applications.
