An apparatus (100) for determining road friction characteristics of a commercial vehicle (10) is disclosed. The commercial vehicle (10) comprises a first axle (11), a second axle (12), a load distribution mechanism (14) for changing a load (Fn) on the second axle (12) or the first axle (11), and a slip sensor (16) for determining a slip value of at least one wheel (17, 18) on the first axle (11) or the second axle (12). The device (100) has an evaluation unit (110) which is configured to: control the load distribution mechanism (14) in order to vary the load (Fn) on the second axle (12) or the first axle (11); determining a change in the slip value in response to a change in the load (Fn); and evaluating the road friction characteristic according to the change of the sliding value.
