The invention discloses a monitoring method and a monitoring system for the operation state of a gantry crane. The method comprises the following steps: acquiring load data, stress data and cross beam mid-span deflection of the gantry crane; determining the maximum combined stress of a beam unit of the gantry crane and a displacement value of a node of the beam unit according to the loaded data; according to the loaded data, the stress data, the cross beam mid-span deflection, the maximum combined stress and the displacement value, carrying out operation state early warning on the gantry crane; a maximum combined stress cloud picture is generated according to the maximum combined stress, a gantry crane deformation cloud picture is generated according to the displacement value, the maximum combined stress cloud picture and the gantry crane deformation cloud picture are displayed on the three-dimensional model of the gantry crane, and load data and operation state early warning information are displayed. Comprehensive monitoring of the state of the gantry crane is achieved, comprehensiveness and reliability of early warning of the operation state of the gantry crane are improved, and the operation state of the gantry crane can be displayed more visually through visualization of various kinds of information.
