The invention relates to a metamaterial-based torque and shaft rotational speed sensor. A torque measurement system includes an outer rotation shaft and an inner rotation shaft both configured to rotate about a rotation axis. Rotation of the inner rotation shaft causes rotation of the outer rotation shaft via the coupling structure. At least one torque applied to the inner rotating shaft is translated into a first torque dependent angular displacement between the shafts. The first metamaterial track is coupled to the outer rotational axis and configured to co-rotate with the outer rotational axis. The second metamaterial track is coupled to the inner rotational axis and configured to co-rotate with the inner rotational axis. The track is configured to convert the electromagnetic transmit signal to a first electromagnetic receive signal based on the first torque dependent angular displacement, and the receiver is configured to receive the electromagnetic receive signal and measure at least one torque based on the electromagnetic receive signal.
