The invention relates to a method for protecting an occupant of a vehicle (100), said method comprising the following method steps: S1, determining a degree of chest injury of an occupant (P) in the event of a collision of the vehicle (100) on the basis of an evaluation variable (W), said evaluation variable (W) comprising at least a belt pressure and/or a belt pressure change rate at the chest of the occupant; and S2, adjusting a force limiting threshold value (F) of the safety belt according to the obtained damage degree. The invention further relates to a corresponding occupant protection system (1) for a vehicle (100) and to a corresponding vehicle (100). Through some embodiments of the invention, the chest injury condition of the passenger can be evaluated in real time when the vehicle is collided, and the force limiting threshold value can be quickly adjusted according to the chest injury condition, so that further injury to the passenger is avoided.
