There is provided a computer-implemented method for autonomously controlling an aircraft having vertical takeoff and landing capabilities and folded wings, including controlling a plurality of thrust generating components of the aircraft to vertically raise the aircraft when the wings of the aircraft are in a first folded configuration, when the wings of the aircraft are in the first folded configuration, the leading edge of each wing is oriented in the vertical direction; setting a motor controller gain based on a wing of the aircraft being in a first folded configuration; and aligning the aircraft with the airflow direction when the wings of the aircraft are in the first folded configuration; and controlling thrust generating assemblies and control surfaces and internal engagement mechanisms of the aircraft to transition the aircraft from the folded wing configuration to the unfolded wing configuration. A system and a computer program product are also provided.
