The invention relates to a system and method for reducing system overdraw based on feedback in a fuel cell system. A system for reducing excessive draw of power in a vehicle includes a power source having a battery and a fuel cell circuit. The system also includes an ECU that transmits a power limit signal to the vehicle controller, the power limit signal corresponding to an instantaneous maximum power amount of the power source. The ECU also determines a battery allowable power corresponding to an amount of power available to draw from the battery to maintain the SOC of the battery above a lower limit SOC threshold. The ECU also determines a current battery power drawn from the battery corresponding to the instantaneous amount of power drawn from the battery. The ECU is designed to reduce the instantaneous maximum power amount in the power limit signal when the drawn current battery power is greater than the battery allowable power, thereby reducing the drawn current battery power.
