The present disclosure provides methods and systems for increasing available propulsion motor torque during engine startup. Systems and methods for starting an engine that may be started via an electric machine and a driveline disconnect clutch are described. In one example, the method estimates a maximum motor propulsion torque during an engine start. The maximum motor propulsion torque may be based on an estimated speed at which the torque converter impeller speed will be at the end of the engine start-up period.
