The invention relates to an operating unit (1) having a touch-sensitive operating surface (3) and a control unit (5), the operating surface (3) being designed to detect a touch area and to transmit information relating to the touch area to the control unit (5), the control unit (5) determining an activation point on the operating surface (3) from the information relating to the touch area, when the activation point is located in a predetermined block, a function associated with the block is executed, and only when the determined movement speed of the course of the touch area of the operating surface (3) exceeds a predetermined limit value, the function is executed. The control unit (5) determines the activation point from a position on or in the region of a boundary line which delimits the fingertip and is located in front of the direction of movement of the finger on the surface of the operating surface (3), and otherwise determines the activation point from the surface center of gravity of all regions of the operating surface (3) which are touched by the finger at a point in time.
