The invention relates to a cooling system in a fuel cell electric vehicle and a method of controlling the cooling system in the fuel cell electric vehicle. The first chamber is configured to contain a relatively hot fluid. The second chamber is configured to contain a relatively cold fluid. A cooling power/fan power ratio of the positive displacement device at the heat exchanger is monitored, and thermal energy transfer between the coolant and the chamber is controlled based on the ratio. When the ratio is above a predetermined value or a range of predetermined values, then thermal energy from the first chamber is provided to the coolant in the coolant circuit and transferred into the heat exchanger, after which a portion of the thermal energy of the cooled coolant exiting the heat exchanger is provided to and stored in the second chamber. When the ratio is below a predetermined value or range of predetermined values, the stored cold thermal energy is released from the second chamber. The invention also relates to a method of controlling a cooling system.
