The invention relates to an anti-lock brake unit comprising a single actuation solenoid (31) acting on a piston (40) of an associated valve unit (30). The solenoid moves the piston within a primary chamber (38) in fluid communication with the caliper. Movement of the piston closes a bypass passage (50) formed in the valve unit, which normally connects the master cylinder and the caliper. By closing the bypass passage (50), the cumulative increase of the pressure acting on the caliper is stopped. At the same time, the same actuation movement of the piston (40) opens an outflow passage within the valve unit, allowing brake fluid to be discharged from the primary chamber (38) into the expansion chamber. The expansion chamber gives an expanded volume to the brake fluid contained between the valve unit (30) and the brake caliper, thereby reducing the pressure of the brake fluid acting on the brake caliper.
