A controller of a vehicle detects an individual approaching the vehicle and collects data regarding the individual using a sensor to determine if a security risk exists. In one method, the collected data is used to determine whether each person is associated with the vehicle. In response to determining that at least one of the individuals is unknown, a security risk is evaluated based on data from monitoring an environment of the vehicle. In response to determining that the security risk score exceeds a threshold, one or more actions are performed on the vehicle to make the vehicle safer.
